The Modern Quilt Movement and Needlepoint Inspiration!

This winter I took a “Quiltcation”. I was wandering around the world wide wide looking for post winter show inspiration and came across The Modern Quilt Movement*. I learned to quilt about 10 years ago and admired the art quilts that were so popular. I tried my hand at traditional and nontraditional quilting. I liked it, alot. Life went on and needlepoint became my focus. I carved out a week this winter and made a quilt for my daughter. This was happening during the Quiltcon in Austin. There was so much energy and inspiration at this first ever Quiltcon I got swept away. The whole experience was great fun.

The “Quiltcation” did the trick! I have new needlepoint designs inspired by The Modern Quilt Movement for the TNNA Summer NeedleArts Trade Show Booth #1509. (PS. needlepoint canvases are a more manageable size than a quilts.)

Needlepoint Basics- How To Thread Your Needle"-Saturday June 8 10:00-2:00 In this 4 hour class Emeline will teach the fundamentals of Needlepoint. This class is perfect for the absolute beginner or anyone who would like to learn Basketweave. 

We are proud to announce our new Beginner Class. It is a 3 part class with sessions on Wednesday, June 5, 12 and 19. The canvas, by Barbara Bergsten, features clearly stitch painted areas and incorporates 20 decorative stitches from easiest to more complex. Each new stitch builds on knowledge from the previous stitch. Each decorative stitch is uniquely painted to highlight each stitch step. This fun and cheerful canvas is 6x6 on 14 mesh and can be personalized with your initial.

PW12 Large Shift Needlepoint progress!

 

I’ve finished all the flowers on my PW12 Garden Large Shift. I love how the flowers turned out! I was a little worried the Byzantine Stitch would be to big/busy, but I think it works well! My next area will be the pockets. I have added links for the previous posts where you can find the stitch diagrams.

PW12 Large Shift Needlepoint update!

I’ve been working on my PW12 Large Shift needlepoint and want to show you my progress.

 

I finished all the white & pink stripes. I decided to finish all of one area through out the canvas instead of finishing everything in a scroll area. So I have been scrolling up and down the canvas. This way I stay with the one stitch through out the whole canvas. Works better for me because then I stay in the “stitch zone”. I am using the white flannel to protect the stitching when it’s rolled up.

I used the Diagonal Scotch Stitch on the darkest green for the butterfly's body. I liked the way the stitch looked different depending on which way the body was turned.

I used the Nobuko Stitch on the yellow flower centers.

 

Now, I’m working on the Hot Pink flower petals. I am using the Byzantine Stitch.

Inspired to Needlepoint!

I’ve been working on new “Painted Stitches” canvases for the June TNNA Show. Spending all that time with decorative needlepoint stitches has made me want to try some of the stitches on a big piece. What’s bigger or better than a big shift! Just what I need to feel Spring Fever. I picked my PW12 Garden Large Shift 14” x 17” #14 mesh. I’m going to start with the white and pink background stripes. I want each colored stripe to be similar but a little different and easy to compensate. I picked what I call “sister stitches” Mosaic Stripe Stitch for the white stripes and Diagonal Mosaic Stitch for the pink stripes. I’m going to stitch with Vineyard Silk #C-109 Bright White and Vineyard Silk #C-173 Veil. I’ll keep you posted!!!

Needlepoint inspiration, an Artist Date!

An Artist Date (festive, solo expedition to explore something that interests you) is a trick I used in art school. Post-show and all the traveling, setup, meeting everyone, tear-down traveling, shipping...I needed a play date! 

We have a great modern quilt shop here, JEllen’s House of Fabric. I did some research on the Modern Quilt movement and decided I had to make a trip over to the quilt shop for some needlepoint inspiration.

I found this quilt pattern online. I was drawn to the diagonal pattern, white accents and of course the bright colors.

My daughter’s favorite colors are blue, green and yellow. Ellen found the pattern for me and I picked out colors I hope will work.

I’ll play around with the quilt and I’m sure some new needlepoint designs will bloom from my fun artist date!

Palma Seljan Needlepoints!

 

Today I received a message: “I call him "Heavy Metal Skull". Saw the metallic magnifica beads and this canvas came right to mind.” wrote Palma.

This is the first time I’ve seen any of the Pink Pumpkins stitched. It's so adorable!!!! I love to see my needlepoint designs stitched. They always become so much more than I could imagine. 

 

Palma has also shared her stitch guide with us. What a treat! I can’t wait to see the next one.

TNNA Winter Needlepoint Show

 

Home at last! The TNNA Winter Needlepoint Show was GREAT!!! Here’s a picture of most of my booth and home away from home for four days. It was so great to see so many wonderful needlearts people all in one place. 

The Needlepoint Showcase Friday night was a wonderful success! The most beautiful finished needlepoint was displayed. I loved having my “Santa Stitches” part of the group.

As always my candy was a big hit. I brought 11 lbs. and I think only 10 little pieces were left. (see the candy bowl in the left side of each picture!)

Packing Needlepoint for the TNNA Winter Trade Show!

There are stacks of needlepoint packed for TNNA Winter Trade Show! Curtains, finished models and price lists are next. Most important is my travel project! I want to bring something easy, very portable and new. BL33 Gingham belt is the perfect choice. Also I need a new pair of flip flops! Flip Flop season in OH is a long way away, but stitching and having flip flops finished takes some advanced planning.

Jersey Girls Needlepoint!
