Needlepoint Stitch Tangle
I've been ruminating on how to get looser while painting stitch painted needlepoint. Stitch painting means the painter must fully paint each mesh intersection with the appropriate color. I have tried some free form painting and the thought I'd go back and stitch paint the edges. I have a couple of wasted canvases because I couldn't really figure out how to be free with one color, then stitch paint it and then go free form with another color. I'm probably over thinking the whole process. I do like this Zentangle idea and think it can be adapted to needlepoint. What is a Zentangle? Squidoo describes Zentangle as "In a word, a doodle. A structured, contained doodle." I love the idea of doodling on needlepoint canvas. Also it would be a great way to use some threads from my stash, especially threads I've never tried. Which is a goal of mine.
Supplies:
Needlepoint Canvas
(I'm using #14 mesh, 6" x 6")
Masking Tape
Canvas Board
Blank Paper
Pencil
Eraser
Ruler
Scrap Paper
Permanent Paint Pen, Broad line, Neutral
(I'm using Creamy Yellow, DecoColor)
Step 1: Tape blank paper to canvas board. I use a canvas board with paper taped to it for a my design work. The canvas board gives me support and it movable, stackable, etc. The blank paper protects the canvas board from paint and then I can use the boards over and over again.
Step 2: Lightly outline, with pencil, painted canvas size on needlepoint canvas. My painted canvas size is 6" x 6".
Step 3: Tape canvas to the board. Tape evenly and right up to the penciled line.
Step 4: Prepare paint pen per labeled instructions. Test paint pen on scrap paper to make sure it is flowing evenly. I'm using a paint pen instead of paint and brush to get a more fluid, freeform lines.
Step 5: With paint pen draw freeform lines that cross over themselves to get defined areas. Let dry before removing from board.
Step 6: Grab your stash and pull some inspirational threads. Fill in the shapes with decorative needlepoint stitches.
