Needlepoint off to the Finisher

Part of getting ready for a national TNNA show is getting finished models stitched and finished for the show. One of my local finishers just had surgery and wouldn’t be able to help me. What to do??? Then I remembered “meeting” Kristine Kingston of Baltimore Needleworks (http://www.baltimoreneedleworks.com/) on Facebook, in our needlepoint group.  She does beautiful finishing. So.... after a couple of emails my turtles are off to the needlepoint finisher. The idea is a fabric ruffle around the canvas and then apply it to the tote. Can’t wait to see what Kristine does with it! I’ll keep you posted.

Needlepoint Belts

I just got an email from a stitcher asking about needlepoint belts made into flip flops. Any needlepoint belt canvas can be finished into flip flops! I love them (I have 4 pairs). You must stitch a full 36". The way they are cut the finisher needs all that canvas. Your needlepoint shop will send the stitched belt canvas away and it comes back as fabulous flip flops. Start now and you too will have a great pair of flip flops this summer!

BL31 Golf Argyle Needlepoint Belt Stitched

 
BL31 Golf Argyle Needlepoint Belt is stitched and off to the finisher! I'm having it finished as a traditional belt with brown leather and a brass buckle. It's for my son and he has been asking often when it will be complete! I'm so glad to say it's off to the finisher.

Finished Needlepoint!

 
Nothing is more satisfying than getting a needlepoint canvas back from the finisher and having it be everything you hoped it would be! I just got BL30 Tropical Fish Belt back. It is wonderful! And just in time for my daughter's birthday. Hope she loves it too. She picked the fish shape, design, threads and colors. It was her idea to do the overdyed threads on the fish to give them stripes. I love to see the magic of an idea in my head becoming a completely finished canvas. If anyone has a Barbara Bergsten Designs canvas completely finished please send me a picture. I will post it on my blog, facebook and web site!

PS15 Needlepoint Beach House Finished!

 
I started this design in the depths of a frigid Ohio winter. I needed a Beach house!! Somewhere warm and tropical. Since a trip south wasn't in the cards I painted one. Stitching the bright colors and playing around with specialty threads really helped me through some gloomy winter days. I decided to frame the house so it could hang on the wall to help me dream of sand between my toes. Generally I'm not a framed needlepoint person but Edie at Art Etc. Picture Framing does an exceptional job. Thank you Edie!

New Needlepoint Shape

 
Working out a new needlepoint shape is fun and exciting, but... what if it doesn't work out the way I'd hoped???

 

I came up with this "kiss" shape. Each canvas will have a different "Painted Stitches" top and a different word on the front. The half circle wraps around into a "kiss". The finisher would put a ribbon coming out of the top. I painted it, stitched it and sent it off. I think it turned out so cute!!

 
I was thinking of doing 12 Valentine's Day "kisses" but now think I'll do 4 Valentine's Day "kisses", 4 Halloween "kisses" and 4 Christmas "kisses" or should I do 4 Easter "kisses". Would love your opinion!! I need to paint FAST for the show.

One of my favorite things is to see pictures of my designs stitched! Stitchers are amazing and take my simple canvas to places I never dreamed. I just received this picture from Anne in Virginia.

 

..." I have completed the stocking, and it is just fabulous. I did something a little different for the purpose of the class….for most of the ribbons, each half of the ribbon uses the same stitch but different fibers…in an effort to show the different effect that the various fibers will give you. Painted Stitches Needlepoint Canvases

I design many of my needlepoint designs with "Painted Stitches". These are decorative needlepoint stitches, where the actual stitches are painted for the stitcher to follow. They also have stitch guides for each needlepoint design. What happens if you follow all the colors but do the canvas in tent stitch instead of the decorative stitches? That's just what my Mom did on this belt. I've always wondered if the colors and designs could stitch up with tent and be as interesting. They are!! Great job Mom!!

Needlepoint Self-Finishing part 2

I asked Jean to explain how she did the needlepoint self-finishing for the Stirling inserts:

"I use a rotary mat ( usually used for quilting ) so I can get the piece even. Then I use a steam iron, pull the piece into shape, then put it back on the rotary mat to make sure it is all even. Then into the piece, using a wooden coffee stirrer to make sure the corners are in good and tight. Last step is putting a small amount of Barge glue around any leather edging, then put something weighty ( like a dictionary or a couple of novels) on top for an hour or so. Remove, and it should be perfect."

It looks great. Can we see a full picture of it in the folio? Also, did she block it before she put it on the sticky backing.

Sorry it's not best picture. I think she blocks the needlepoint a little bit with a great iron. Jean said this one had great sticky stuff, but she still uses a little glue around the edges.

My friend Jean just finished putting the needlepoint Ribbon Sampler into a Stirling Folio. This is a great canvas to learn stitches and try out overdyed threads! The 6"x6" size is so versatile. I loved designing and stitching this needlepoint canvas.
