Painted Stitches Sampler
I have been thinking about this idea for a while. It finally came together. Many of you followed my Stitch Your Stash Workshop. I loved showing stitchers new stitches, but counting on a blank canvas seemed to be difficult at times. I want all needlepoint to be great experiences! I’m introducing my first Painted Stitches Sampler. It combines all the ideas of old fashion samplers.
A (needlework) sampler is a piece of embroidery produced as a demonstration or test of skill in needlework. It often includes the alphabet, figures, motifs, decorative borders and sometimes the name of the person who embroidered it and the date. From Wikipedia
The center is a saying and the borders are 14 blocks with stitch painted specialty stitches. Today I am going to pull threads and then I will go through the canvas step by step as I stitch it. Painted canvases available soon!

Painted Stitches Sampler Threads
Above are the threads I pulled. I’m using bright colors. This canvas could also be stitched in a more muted palette for a whole different look. The stitch blocks need a total of 14 colors and then a color for the words and another for the background. Stitch Your Stress Away uses a total of 16 colors. I chose to pull all new threads, but this would be a great “stash” project too!

Painted Stitches Sampler Stretcher Bars
I am going to stitch Stitch Your Stress Away on stretcher bars. The canvas wasn’t wide enough for my scroll frame so I bought a pair of 12” and a pair of 10” stretcher bars and a box of tacks. Thankfully Jean helped and put it all together. I’ve learned whenever you stitch multiple decorative stitches a frame should always be used. This keeps the needlepoint canvas taut and the threads don’t get all bunched up. The canvas also retains its squared up shape. I like “scoop” stitching and rolling and folding my canvas into my project bag. This isn’t possible with a frame. I want the stitches as straight as possible so now it’s all framed up!!

SLANTED GOBELIN STITCH
The first block for the Painted Stitches Sampler is the SLANTED GOBELIN STITCH. I stitched it horizontally over 3 mesh threads, using the continental stitch to divide the groupings. I have done the needlepoint stitch diagram in color. I hope this helps see the steps. Whenever I stitch a multiple step stitch I always do it in two colors. That way I can see step one and fill in with step two.
